A Memorable Evening of Music at the Mosta Rotunda

by | Apr 18, 2026

Once again the graceful Mosta Rotunda proved why it stands not only as a place of worship, but as one of Malta’s most inspiring cultural venues. During the Christmas season of 2025, its vast dome and remarkable acoustics became the setting for an unforgettable musical experience: The Gift of Song concert, performed by the internationally acclaimed Libera.

Organised as a collaboration between the Mosta Rotunda Foundation and Visit Malta, the event brought together local and international audiences for an evening that blended sacred space, musical excellence, and seasonal joy.

A Setting Like No Other

Few venues can rival the atmosphere of the Mosta Rotunda. Built between 1833 and the 1860s and inspired by Rome’s Pantheon, the basilica is crowned by one of the largest unsupported domes in the world, measuring approximately 39–40 metres in diameter .

This architectural grandeur is not merely visual—it plays a vital role in shaping sound. The dome’s natural acoustics allow voices to rise, resonate, and gently return, creating an immersive listening experience that enhances choral music in a way few modern halls can replicate.

It was within this extraordinary setting that Libera’s voices unfolded, filling the space with clarity, depth, and emotion.

The Choir: Libera’s Distinctive Sound

Libera is a London-based boys’ choir known worldwide for its unique blend of classical choral tradition and contemporary arrangements. Their signature sound—pure, ethereal, and uplifting—has earned them a global following, with performances across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.

Their repertoire often bridges the sacred and the modern, making them especially suited to venues like the Mosta Rotunda, where spirituality and artistry meet.

A Programme Rooted in Tradition

The Gift of Song concert featured a carefully curated selection of Christmas favourites and sacred works, each chosen to reflect the spirit of the season. Among the highlights were:

  • Silent Night – a timeless carol known for its simplicity and emotional depth
  • Ding Dong Merrily on High – a joyful and uplifting festive piece
  • Ninni la Tibkix Iżjed – Malta’s beloved traditional Christmas hymn

The inclusion of Ninni la Tibkix Iżjed was particularly meaningful, connecting the international choir with Maltese cultural heritage and offering the audience a moment of shared identity and reflection.

An Audience Captivated

Both performances drew strong attendance, with the Rotunda filled by music lovers eager to experience Libera live. The combination of youthful voices and the sacred grandeur of the basilica created a powerful atmosphere—one that was both intimate and expansive.

Listeners were not merely spectators; they became part of a shared moment shaped by sound, space, and tradition. The silence between pieces, the rise of harmonies into the dome, and the final echoes fading into stillness all contributed to an experience that lingered long after the concert ended.

Continuing a Living Tradition

The Mosta Rotunda is not only a historic monument but an active parish and cultural centre. Events like The Gift of Song reflect its ongoing mission: to serve both the spiritual life of the community and Malta’s cultural landscape.

By hosting performances of this calibre, the Mosta Rotunda Foundation continues to:

  • Promote artistic excellence
  • Support international cultural exchange
  • Offer meaningful experiences to both locals and visitors

This balance between faith, heritage, and the arts is what keeps the Rotunda alive—not as a relic of the past, but as a living space where beauty continues to unfold.

A Lasting Impression

As the final notes of the concert faded beneath the great dome, what remained was more than music. It was a sense of connection—between voices and listeners, between tradition and present day, and between Malta and the wider world.

In a place already marked by history, faith, and even the famous wartime “Miracle of Mosta,” evenings like this add another layer to its story—one shaped by harmony, reverence, and shared human experience.

For those who were present, The Gift of Song was not just a concert. It was a moment to remember.
